Three kinds of units

Chiller, heat pump or free cooler?

All three produce water for the HVAC system – fan coils, air handling units or chilled ceilings. They differ in whether they can also heat and how much energy they use.

Water chiller

Produces chilled water, typically 7/12 °C, for cooling rooms and equipment. From compact units to screw chillers above 1 MW.

WhenWhen you only need cooling or heat with another source.

Heat pump

A reversible unit cools in summer and heats in winter – and produces domestic hot water up to 60–78 °C. One source for the whole year.

WhenWhen you replace a boiler or want cooling and heating from one unit.

Free cooler

When it is colder outside than the return water, the ambient air cools it without a compressor. Works together with a chiller and takes over part or all of the load.

WhenFor year-round cooling – data centres, server rooms, processes.

Technology

Less energy, less noise, less environmental impact

An HVAC system runs at part load for most of the year. That is why seasonal efficiency, quiet fans and low-GWP refrigerants matter.

Inverter

Variable-speed compressors follow the actual demand. At part load they use much less energy and avoid constant cycling.

Refrigerants

The refrigerant decides the future of the unit

The EU F-gas Regulation (2024/573) is gradually restricting high-GWP refrigerants. For a new system that will run for 15 years or more, the refrigerant is therefore an important decision.

  • R290 (propane) – natural refrigerant with a GWP of 3
  • R454B – low GWP, replaces R410A
  • A lower-GWP refrigerant means fewer restrictions on service and top-ups

Applications

Where MTA air conditioning systems work

From production halls to hotels – every building has its own load profile, noise requirements and heating needs.

Production halls

Cooling of large spaces and air handling units, often combined with process cooling and heat recovery.

Data centres

Year-round cooling with redundancy and free cooling, which covers a larger share of the load in colder months.

Office buildings

Heat pumps for cooling and heating, fan coils and chilled ceilings, BMS integration.

Hospitals

Reliable air conditioning of operating theatres, laboratories and wards – with two circuits or stand-by units.

Hotels

Low-noise versions, domestic hot water from the heat pump and heat recovery for pools and wellness.

Shopping centres

Inverters for large spaces with strongly varying loads throughout the day and the year.

Server rooms and telecoms

Smaller high-availability units for server rooms and telecommunication nodes.

Residential buildings

R290 heat pumps for heating, cooling and domestic hot water in apartment buildings.

FAQ

Questions about industrial air conditioning

What is the difference between a water chiller and a heat pump?

A water chiller only cools. A heat pump is reversible: it cools in summer, heats in winter, and some versions also produce domestic hot water. If the building is heated by a boiler or district heating, a chiller is enough; when renewing the heating, a heat pump is often the better choice.

How large a system do I need?

We start from the building heat loads – floor area, glazing, occupants, equipment and location – or from the data of the existing system. As a guide, offices often need 60–100 W of cooling per m², but the exact capacity comes from a load calculation.

Why the natural refrigerant R290?

R290 (propane) has a GWP of 3, so the F-gas regulation does not restrict it the way it restricts synthetic refrigerants. It is very efficient but flammable, which is why MTA uses it in units for outdoor installation with appropriate safety measures.

What do SEER and EER mean?

EER is the ratio of cooling capacity to electrical input at one rating point. SEER covers the whole season, when the unit mostly runs at part load – so it better reflects real running costs. Inverter units have the advantage at part load.

Can the cooling be integrated into the existing building management system?

Yes. MTA units support Modbus RS485, and larger series also BACnet and Ethernet. You can monitor them from the BMS and receive alarms remotely.

When does free cooling pay off?

When you also need cooling in winter – in data centres, server rooms or with a process load. With a higher return water temperature, the number of hours when ambient air is sufficient is high in our climate. We calculate it for your location.
